Legacy of Sens-it-iv in an E-learning portal

Sens-it-iv: an EU-funded programme on the development of Novel Testing Strategies for In Vitro Assessment of Allergens

Dissemination of knowledge generated in large EU-funded projects is an important aspect, especially when the project is nearing the end. The Integrated Project Sens-it-iv, funded under EU Framework Programme 6, is nearing completion this year and in order to provide a legacy for future reference this e-learning portal has been generated. Scientific merit in the form of published papers, continuing projects, conference minutes and proceedings and newsletters are other examples of the Sens-it-iv legacy and much can be found on the projects website: http://www.sens-it-iv.eu/. E-learning is an instrument by which the participant can actively acquire knowledge by means of an electronic learning environment. The great advantage is that the participant can do this at his own pace, in his own time and space. A second advantage is that the information in the electronic learning environment can be reviewed at the level that is required by the participant. In other words: if information is redundant, these steps can be skipped.

In this E-learning portal, two examples of sensitization tests that have been developed within the Sens-it-iv consortium are used as learning materials. The current version of the portal is a pilot to evaluate the suitability of the portal to learn how to perform these kind of assays and to investigate the possibility to include more assays in the future. Relevant theoretical background, information on materials and tips and tricks on how to perform the assays and gather the data of the experiments are all included in the portal.
